Why Swim Buoy Design Matters More Than You Think

On land, most swim buoys look similar. In the water, the differences are huge.

When I’m choosing a buoy, I pay attention to:

What I Don’t Recommend: Donut-Style Buoys with Center Storage

I’ve tried donut-style buoys with a water bottle or storage in the center, and for me, they were a clear no.

Despite sounding clever in theory, they created noticeable drag and pulled unpredictably. The added resistance disrupted stroke rhythm and made the swim feel heavier almost immediately.

In open water, even small inefficiencies add up quickly. Anything that increases resistance or side-to-side movement becomes tiring — especially over longer swims.

More storage isn’t always better. Often, it’s just more to manage.

A good swim buoy doesn’t make you feel safer by being bigger or more complex. It earns its place by staying stable, visible, and quiet in the water.

For me, that means choosing:

– and only as much storage as I’ll actually use
